The origin story

The Southern cross or Boghdad is widely seen in West Africa and Southern Morocco. This type of pendant seems to be strongly connected to the Moors, and those with contact with the Moors, including the nomadic peoples in the Western part of the Sahara and all the other related groups as well as those who came under their influence, such as the sedentary people to the North such as the Harratine and south west Moroccan Berbers and the black skinned Sahel peoples in the region to the south. The Moors are of a complex heritage of Arab and Berber ethnic mix, but it seems that a large part of their material culture was borrowed from the once thriving Ghana Kingdom established in Central South Mauritania. Their original Berber ancestors destroyed this Ghana kingdom before they themselves were eventually subjugated by the Bedouin Arab nomads coming from the east and the result gave the Moor’s. (THE SOUTHERN CROSS BY ALAA EDDINE SAGID FOR ETHNIC JEWELS MAGAZINE) Amazonite is found in colours ranging from soft milky green to blue green or turquoise. This beautiful gem is sometimes called “Amazon Stone”. It’s named after the Amazon River in Brazil where it was first believed to have been discovered. Whether this stone was found there is uncertain now as mineralogists have since claimed that there are no Amazonite deposits in the Amazon itself. Amazonite is still found in other parts of Brazil as well as the USA, Australia, Russia, and Madagascar. It is said to have been used as far back as the 10th century B.C. by the semi-mythical Amazonians – a tribe of powerful female warriors, who wore it as part of their shields. Amazonite promotes general good physical health is also known as the Stone of Courage because it helps the wearer to eliminate personal fears.
